Right here, right now in our community someone is considering suicide. In fact, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 24. It has to stop and the way we are going to do that is to create awareness.
So how will we do that? We will start with a 5K, “Run for brAvery,” a race run in memory of Avery Cantor – a high school honor student, athlete, and peer leader who committed suicide last May shortly after being diagnosed with severe depression. We are teaming up with the Lafayette’s Men’s Lacrosse team on this event to strategically reach High School students and families.
A majority of proceeds will go to CHAD’S Coalition, an organization that focuses on suicide prevention with children and teens. CHADS will use the funds to continue to educate about what signs to look for if someone is depressed or suicidal, support those suffering and fight to diminish the stigma of mental illness. They provide services to young students (elementary thru high school) by age appropriate training to specific students to be ‘Ambassadors’ to their peers at school who may be suffering.
The Lafayette Lacrosse team will use the monies it receives to continue it's scholarship fund, and to subsidize team fees.
We need your support. Would you be willing to donate towards this worthy cause? Every little bit can make a difference.
Please know that our youth are struggling, perhaps even your own children but there is hope and support. If we can teach our children what to do and how to get help and alleviate their anxiety about asking for help, we can change the statistics. Help us start a conversation and erase the stigma. Please be part of this fundraiser; it’s a life-saving effort.
